Book list (as tedious as it sounds)

Post by whiteoctave »

Alright quirites, i've bought more books over the last term, and have duly updated my list. this is only of interest, i should imagine, to the select few who made any bibliophilic or classically-based comments about the shorter list i put up a while ago. for most, however, this list wil be rather dull and will seem, i should imagine, tantamount to a bookbasedboast. such is life.

*in awe* Wow, as always you have quite the list! I wish there were as many second hand bookstores selling the Classics in Canada as you are blessed to have in the U.K.

Hmmm.... on my bookshelf I can see a pathetic copy of the Apologia (it was nice and new when I bought it, but now i've coloured it in :P .... and some rain got on it... not to mention the fact I've tried to fold it a million times...) and next to it my dictionary... and then some extracts from the Odyssey, but that's it. I had some other Latin books, but I've handed them all onto my sister and I seem to have lost some other books... at least I can't see them. Maybe the cat ate them?

I'm not sure I'd ever find the time to read all the books in you have...

Today I received about £150 worth of books. You will not really be interested in French university books or advanced italian courses or insane Zulu programmes which are impossible. Relating to classics however I also received Tacitus Annals I, it's good book apart from the lack of macrons!

Ann. I is, nisi fallor, one of the greatest surviving gems of Latin prose. It is the man at his finest. It is also worth noting the cheeky opening (scan the first sentence).

EDIT

Reads first 1 1/2 pages. hmm I don't know any history behind it so even if I understand the text it's hard to know what he's talking about! Anyway  I always thought Tacitus to be quite impartial! sine ira et studio is great!

'sine ira et studio' is that tacitus?!

no, the first sentence is in a certain ironic metre.
