Representing Long Marks on Latin Words

Post by dmlscholar » Tue Nov 21, 2006 8:07 pm

Does anyone know how it is possible for a Windows XP user to represent the long marks that are often placed over the long vowels of latin words? This would be of great help help to me.

Hi...

I did it rather clumsily by just going into Word 2003, finding the appropriate vowel + macron combinations in "Insert Symbol," and then redefining the keystroke to be "alt + whatever."

Now, when I want "ā" I just type "alt + a."

Hope this helps,
Chris

cdm2003, thanks, that is superb I wish I have thought of that earlier.
I don't, however, think it is clumsy, it is still easier to manage than typing Greek with Microsoft's polytonic system.

What do you mean vowel + macron combinations? I can insert the macron but I am unaware of how to display it above the vowel.

In Microsoft Word:

Insert > Symbol > [find the letter] > Shortcut key > [press the keys you want, for example Ctrl + Shift + Dash, Shift + A] > Assign > OK
[find next letter] > Shortcut key > [press the keys you want] > Assign > OK

...and so on for the rest.
