And so, to prepare for the coming of the king, Ben-Hur swiftly raises and trains an army of Galileans, using his own wealth to arm and feed the soldiers. Only a few months have passed when exciting news reaches the camp.

A strange man who calls himself John the Baptist has come forth from wilderness and preaches that the Kingdom of God is at hand. Even now he is on the banks of the river Jordan baptizing all who believe him.

Mirus vir quidam qui vocatur Joannes Baptista accedens ex deserto prædicat quia appropinquavit regnum Dei. Et nunc adest super ripas Jordani fluvii baptizans οmnes credentes in eum.

This is surely the herald announcing the arrival of our new king. I will go to him at once.

Hic est certe præco nuntians adventum novi regis nostri. Statim ergo ibo ad eum.

Ben-Hur’s first move is to rush a messenger to Antioch telling Simonides to join him at once in Jerusalem.

Primum quidem Benhur mittit nuntium ad Antiocheam qui jubeat Simonidam statim occurrere ei Hierosolymis.

Be swift to carry this message to Simonides. Wait to bring a reply, but when you return, you will find me somewhere along the banks of the Jordan.

Festina ferre hanc epistulam ad Simonidam. Mane dum responsus detur, cum autem reversus eris, me invenies alicubi secundum ripas Jordani.

Ben-Hur travels alone and on foot. As he approaches a ford in the river he is surprised to come upon Balthasar and his daughter Iras.

Benhur pedibus iter facit solus. Dum appropinquat ad vadum fluvii miratur quia incidit in Balthasar et Iradem filiam ejus.

News of the herald must have reached you also. Let us travel onward together.

This meeting with you is most welcome to us, Ben-Hur. Come with us, the Jordan must not be far.

Libenter vero occurrimus tibi, o Benhur.

As before, the Egyptian girl quickly wins Ben-Hur’s favor with her exotic charm.

Sicut evenit antea, Ægyptia venusta peregrina cito gratiam init a Benhur.

I have waited many years to see the fulfillment of the heavenly message. Soon the king will make himself known to us.

Multos annos expectavi nuntium e cælo impleri. Brevi enim rex manifestabitur nobis.

With your army you will become his most powerful ally. All the tribes of Israel will obey Ben-Hur.

Exercitum habens fies potentissus inter socios ejus. Omnes enim tribus Israël obœdient Benhur.

Great armies will move at your command. Next to the new king you will be the most important figure in the world. Rome itself will bow before you.

Magni exercitus te imperante ibunt. Post autem novum regem, tu primus in orbe terrarum eris. Ipsæ enim Romæ adorabunt te.

Look yonder the Jordan! A crowd is gathered along the bank.

Ecce Jordanus! Turba enim secundum ripam congregata est.
