For many weeks a star of startling brightness had moved across the heavens, guiding three wise and holy men on their journey from far distant lands. Urged on by a revelation from God, they too found that their course brought them near Jerusalem.

Multum tempus stella quædam mira claritate transiverat cæla, dum duceret tres sanctos magos, qui e longinquo iter faciebant.

Then at last the star stood still in the sky and the wise men knew that their journey had neared its end.

Tunc demum stella in cælo manente, magi intellexerunt se iter mox confecturos.

Eleven days after the birth the Christ child, the three wise men, coming in search of him, passed through the Damascus gate to Jerusalem.

Undecimo die post infantem Christum natum, tres magi, qui illum sectabantur, porta Damasci Hierosolyma ingressi sunt .

Who are these men that ride such fine camels?

Qui sunt isti qui talibus camelis vehuntur?

Τίνες εἰσὶν οὗτοι οἱ ἐλαύνοντες τοιούτους καμήλους;

They are strangers to our city. But mark how they look upon us! What can they be seeing?

Alieni sunt in civitate nostra. Videte autem quomodo aspiciunt nos! Quid vero vident?

Ξένοι μέν εἰσι ἐν τῇ πόλει ἡμῶν. Ἴδετε δὲ πῶς βλέπουσι πρὸς ἡμᾶς. Τί δὴ ὁρῶσιν;

One of the remarkable travelers startled the people with his forthright question.

Unus ex insignibus viatoribus candide rogans turbabat populum.

Where is he that is born king of the Jews?

Ubi est qui natus est rex Judæorum?

Ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ τεχθεὶς βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων;

Who? We have not heard of him.

Quis? Illum non cognovimus.

Repeating their question throughout the city and receiving no answer, the wise men were summoned to appear before the crafty king Herod who feared that some new ruler had appeared who would replace him on his throne.

If the Messiah is truly come, the prophecies reveal that he will be born in Bethlehem. Go then and search diligently for the child and report back to me at once what you have found.

I will know how to deal with any new born king if these fools can find him.

Bene utar modo genito quoque rege, si isti stulti eum invenerint.
