[C&P] Ch 9 compositions

Post by mingshey » Fri Oct 17, 2008 8:52 am

I'm going to finish my composition work for the Chase & Phillips before tackling on another good textbook.

The assignments in the book are in brown, and my attempt is in blue. The grammar and vocabulary are limited to those that are introduced up to this chapter.

English Sentences:

1. There is nothing in life than tyranny, as the wisest of all men, Socrates, used to say.
2. The Greeks, therefore, thought that health was the best possession for men.
3. I say that tyranny is the worst thing for men.
4. Democracy did not teach the Greeks to be always calm, neither did tyranny teach them (α?το?ς) to be harsh.
5. They say that health is a pleasant thing for both body and soul.
6. The wise man said that nothing is better than democracy.

Review Exercises
II. Write in Greek:

1. The soldiers came from the city into the war.
2. Upon the stone they sacrificed the best of the young men.
3. The Greeks thought that they were brave, but the Persians did not think so.
4. Truth is a wall for the just and fair.
5. He was so wicked that the citizens did not judge him worthy to be king.

Any advice is readily welcome. :)

Thank you. I see the points.
Although since I'm supposed to use the vocabulary introduced thus far I would have to write ?παίδευσε instead of ?δίδαξε here, I see that I failed to apply the conjugation correctly. Also I confused the neuter singular nominative ending with that of the article, used singular for plural, and omitted a whole word, κτλ..
In a few months my memory faded away so quickly. Or it is that I didn't practice much enough. :( I see I should carve out more time to practice.

Well, anyway, the vocabulary at the end of the book has "διδάσκω" for "teach" so I'd better follow the suggestion of Swth\r. 8)
