Looking for three words which look alike

Post by cclaudian »

Hi all,

I'm writing a text-crit themed Greek epigram and trying to think of three words which look plausibly alike, scan the same, and of which perhaps one might be kind of funny. Ideally they would be iambs starting with a consonant, like φόνος/πὀνος I imagine

The sort of thing I'm trying to think of is like Latin 'homo'/'humo' (man/to the ground), or 'iactatus/lactatus' (tossed/milked). As I know Greek less well, I'm struggling to think of pairs/triplets of this kind which also contain some hint of humour.

A weird request, I know, but if anyone gets any ideas, I shall be all ears!

Hey,

Off the top of my head:

βολή (a shot) and χολή (gall, bile)
χορδή (musical string) and πορδή (fart)
πῖλος (a hat) and τῖλος (excrement)
ψιλός (bare, stripped) and σπίλος (blemish)
ὄρθιος (straight, upright) and βόθριος (from βόθρος = a pit, specifically a pit for refuse)

The triplets are somewhat harder, I'll have to get back to you on those :)
