Double Contraction in Verbs with -oέω?

Post by Gregorius »

I'm on Unit 6 of "Teach Yourself Complete Ancient Greek" by Gavin Betts and Alan Henry, and I've come across a couple of verbs in the vocabulary that end with -oέω. Do they undergo a double contraction (e.g. pres. ind. act. oινoχῶ, oινoχoῖς, oινoχoῖ, oινoχoῦμεν, oινoχoῖτε, oινoχoῦσιν)?

Nope, verbs get one stem contraction apiece.

The only regular instance of double contraction I can think of is in names that end in -κλης (Smyth §265).

That's surprising! Given the Greeks' aversion to hiatus BETWEEN different words, one would think they'd elide/contract as much as possible WITHIN the same word. Interesting. So I guess the correct conjugation would be oινoκoῶ, oινoκoεῖς, oινoκoεῖ, oινoκooῦμεν, oινoκoεῖτε, oινoκooῦσιν

Thanks for clearing that up!
