The History of Words

Post by TamerOfHorses » Wed Aug 05, 2009 6:43 pm

Hey everyone!

I've been reading some books and articles about the history of words in Greek literature. I study Greek philosophy and seek to clarify the semantics of Greek words. In particular, I've been looking at philosophical words like logos and paralogos, deinos, noos, etc. What value do you guys think is in understanding the history of Greek words? Do you have any resources that you use to look up such information?

I've been reading John Burnet's Ancient Greek Philosophy and he has a bunch of indexes wherein he deconstructs some words using their history, historia is the original Ionic word for 'science'. I've also found some cool articles from UoC's Classical Philology about the histories of Greek religious terms.

Any thoughts?
