Isn't "ei" a diphthong? If it is, the "i" in "ei" can't be treated as a consonant (can it?).

Sorry, I don't mean to pretend to know anything about this. I'm just confused, that's all.

All, I've been studying Latin with my homeschooled son for several years, but at a very basic introductory level. We've just started D'Ooge's "Latin for Beginners" and it seems to be going well.
