... I was particularly puzzled by the suggestion that a grave accent was used to mark a syllable that was previously (but no longer) acute, and so should be pronounced at base level. ... The accent marking system is sometimes said to have a simpler precursor: each unaccented syllable after the stre...

... For example, the word ἔζομαι, root "sed-", I assumed an S had been added between the stem and the personal endings (for some reason...). This is the only example I can think of at the moment (I am a newbie as you know)... perhaps there is another explanation for this word? This...

Re: Suggestions for a Beginner

I can probably afford to spend anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour on Greek several days per week. I'm going to have to do some serious budgeting of my time, but I figure it's more worthwhile than zoning out in front of the TV or reading a novel for the umpteenth time. Any suggestions, other than "D...

I meant any style. I meant any rule, that is more specific then: ,,sometimes it happens.`` Isocrates sounds good. Maybe [Demosthenes, Plato, or Xenofon]'s style would be good as well. It really does not matter as long as it is (a) Attic prose (b) consistent rule set (c) based on real evidence. (a) c...

Krasis, elisis and hiati

I wonder, is there a rule that tells when to use krasis, when to elide the final vowel, and when to leave hiatus? (I mean in prose, in verse it is dictated by the metrum)

I was told that ``aspirated rho'' was first sounded as `hr' which was changed later to `rh' and to `r' even later. The theory is not far fetched considering the evolution of English. HWAET > WHAT > WAT (though still written what) HW > WH > W in English HR > RH > R in Greek As for your attempts: I ha...
