"Instead of"

Salvete amici et amicae!

What is the best way to use "instead of" in Latin, loco or pro?

Example:

Lege hunc librum loco illum.

Lege hunc librum pro illo.

Are both equally acceptable?

Working out of North and Hilliard; some questions

Salvete omnes! I've been working out of the North and Hilliard composition book provided on this website and I'd just like to say thank to you for making this resource available! Having an answer key is awesome. I just have a few questions about synonyms. 1. abeo vs. discedo I've noticed that when I...

Re: Dealing with words that have more than 5 meanings

@Furry and Thesaurus, Thanks for the perspective. Maybe I was looking into a word too in-depth as I came across it! @Craig_Thomas Thanks for a lot for your perspective as well. It definitely does help to consolidate all the different meanings into one idea, when possible. Your example really helped,...

Dealing with words that have more than 5 meanings

What's the best way to handle some of the words which have a lot of meanings: Example (From Collins Latin Concise Dictionary): constituo-- to put, place, set down (mil) to station, post, halt to establish, build, create to settle, to arrange, organize to appoint, determine, fix to resolve, decide "C...

Salvete amici amicaeque! I'm working through Caesar and I was wondering which Accusative construction this is: It's from Caesar 1.5: ...oppida sua omnia, numero ad duodecim, vicos ad quadringentos... I know to whom you are giving the book. Scio cuius libri sit. I know whose book it is. Scio quem necaveris...

Furrykef, Surely it should! Correction made. As for the A&G example, it's kind of hard to see a sudden exception brought up in Latin without an explanation! In Spanish (or any other spoken language) it's easy because you hear it so often that it just gets ingrained and eventually you stop thinking a...
