I doesn't seem right to use the vocative unless it's addressing someone emphatically. I usally implicitlty add "Oh ....." to see if it would make sense to use the vocative somewhere. There are a few exceptions, for example "God save the Queen" could go either way with the vocative.

Today's computer software in Latin?

Here's a bit of a left field one. I was thinking of having a go at adding Latin as a language option in a program that is used in day to day computer life. A web browser like firefox sprung to mind. I rekon it would be cool, in a wierd sort of way. Do you guys have any other program suggestions that...

This has got me interested. The quote can be from one thing only, and that's the Placebo song. Is this you translating to, or translating from a latin version they've written? They've done a French once, but I haven't heard of a latin one.

I think one of the other problems is that English seems to have a lot more words than other languages (speaking only of European languages here - I don't know about, say, Chinese) as we borrow words and also create them if needed! This means we can use a lot more nuances, pitch our speech to differ...

Certainly. It's a good thing he used symbols in most of his poetry because when he was feeling really bad, he sort of went for a more vulgar tone... hehe... Speaking of vulgar tone, I can't remember which author it was, but one event that sticks in my mind is of a crass entertainer brining guests a...

I think what you are missing is that most of the Latin we read is rhetoric and you are comparing that to your typical, casual English and creating an unbalanced comparison. If you look at English speeches or poetry or stories, the meanings are not very strict either, but are instead designed to pla...

No, the Romans were strange weren't they? But that information is quite important if you want to understand the poems. If you don't know that the sparrow is a sex symbol, it's harder to understand them :P Ah, it makes a bit more sense now. He was certainly a passionate chap, even with his blokey ma...

Does Latin lack in exactness?

After reading more and more Latin, it got me thinking as to the stengths and weaknesses of English compared to Latin. One of the ideas that struck me was the fact that a lot of the texts leave a lot of the passages up to individual interpretation as to exactly what the author was trying to say rathe...

Classics programs on BBC are a case in point. You have nationalized the TV industry, which can quite easily be made to function in the private sector. And classics programs paid by taxes are, let's face it, essentially welfare for the rich. I am jealousissimus (guess which chapter in Wheelock I'm u...

Re:Why Latin? (Spinoff from Mythology in Latin)

I started learning it as an interest thing, then decided to go to University and learn some more. Don't really have a reason I can verbalise as to why I'm learning it; I guess it's just because I like learning other languages.

I just received my copy from Amazon today and looks like it's going to be a well-used reference guide :) I think my next purchase will be a detailed reference of Latin as I seem to be comfortable with a large portion of its concepts now. I've gone through the three Oxford Latin Course books and am now on the reader. I can see Caesar on the horizon, which I'm told is a grammar perfectionist, so I'd like to get a good single reference which I can quickly look up rules. Would the M & F be good for someone who would use it as a referenc...
