De Schola Latina Universali

Alvarus omnibus salutem dicit. Given that I see a lot of people who want to learn Latin but can not because of the lack of time or proper methods (and that is why this forum and webpage exist, to try to solve this problem) and since I haven't seen any references to the Schola Latina Universalis, I c...

Re: Classical or Ecclesiastical

Erm, I didn't say it wasn't. I just said that the italiane pronounciation has never been used outside of Italy until the second half of the 20th century. But well, at least I do know that the pronounciation I currently use wasn't used everywhere for centuries.

Re: Classical or Ecclesiastical

The problem with the “ecclesiastical” pronounciation of Latin is that it has been never used anywhere* outside of Italy until the 20th century, so pretending to read Neo-Latin texts written by non-Italian with the Italian pronounciation is just wrong. Again, that the Italians use the Italian pronunc...

Re: Classical or Ecclesiastical

Hi there. Well, even if we can not get the actual way Latin was spoken (I mean, the accent, and so on) but we have been able to identify the different sounds corresponding to ancient Latin (which could, of course vary because of accents of different speakers) we should be aware that THERE IS NOT an ...

Re: Is Vocabulary King?

And objects didn't fall before Newton? Erm... not quite. Newton didn't invent gravity, he described and formulated it. I don't remember well, but I am pretty sure that when I started speaking my mother tongue no one explained to me the different endings of verbs, nor the different conjugations nor ...

De Circulis Latinis necnon Sodalitatibus

Alvărus consodalibus salutem. Abhinc annum fere et dimidium, catalogum Circulorum Latinorum conficio. Circulus Latinus est sodalitas qua homines conveniunt frequenter ut latine inter se loquantur. Ob quam causam, et ut homines linguam latinam in orbe ac in rete colentes sciant num sint sodalitates h...

Re: memorizing vocabulary

I have myself used several Assimil methods in which everyday learning is encouraged, but I found using flashcards to remember particular/difficult words or to fix them to memory (just as a help device for learning, not just the only method of memorizing ) very useful. Working out, drilling exercises...

Schediasma?

I am currently reading G. Wilhelm's Leibniz biography by M. A. Antognazza (a philosopher I estimate not quite because of his philosophy but because of his scholarship) and I came across a word from a physics paper he wrote called Schediasma de resistentia motii . I looked for σχεδίασμα at several gr...

Re: Modern greek pronunciation

Yes, if you're reading French from the 12th century, or whenever that spelling was standardized, you might find it helpful to pronounce the letters as they were pronounced at that time. And I say this as someone who is fascinated with historical pronunciations. When reading Molière I actually use t...

So one should distinguish in French between AU, O and EAU, and pronounce them the English way, because one can get confused since in French they are pronounced the same way?

Re: memorizing vocabulary

But different methods of learning do not exclude each other. For instance, one can learn vocabulary from a given context (say reading Athénaze) the writing down variations out of a given example, jot down the obscure words in a paper and read it while commuting, even write the new vocabulary (learnt...

Re: Is Vocabulary King?

I would say vocabulary is actually King but with a grain of salt. Of course learning vocabulary is something very important (the limits of our vocabulary are the limits of our world, as Wittgenstein wrote) not to be denied the important part of how the vocabulary interacts. First came the words, the...

Re: Methods for learning Greek

I have been learning Latin for the last 3 years, and I have finally achieved a nice range of fluency that allowed me even to compose some poetry. However, I didn't start greek until almost 7 months ago, unfortunately, and I have frequently questioned myself about the best way or method to learn thes...

Re: Text for Learning Greek and Latin in Tandem

Hi, there. Well... the only latin-greek text I know that could be useful for learning would be a Comenius' latin-greek translation of the Janua Linguarum. I don't know if it follows the steps of the Orbis Sensualium units, or not, but I think after reading several times the Orbis, it would be a quit...
