Re: Remnants of locative case in Greek

LSJ also direct χαμαί and χθών to Indo-European origins, but could there be any remotest connection between them and the Χημία(or kmt, the Egyptian name for Egypt, from black-land)? They sound so close to each other.

mwh:
πᾷ as first word has to mean “Where?” interrogative.
Now I see there's a separate entry for πῇ. I thought πᾷ was some Doric variant of πη.
How stupid I am after all the years' experience to not have learned how(ὅπη) to look up the dictionary!!!
Thanks a lot for all the clarifications!

Re: Archimedes' quote

Thank you guys for your replies. The Diodorus version might have to be translated, "shall I go anywhere, and move the whole earth with the lever?" (πᾷ (πη) -> where, as indirect interrogative doesn't work well with the question mark...) βῶ (βαίνω) go, is used to mean "stand" in perfect form, i.e. βέ...

Archimedes' quote

Hello, everyone! It's been a long time since I visited textkit. I find one of Archimedes' quotes "Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the Earth" presented in Greek in some variations on the internet. I first came across "δός μοι πᾶ στῶ, καὶ τὰν γᾶν κινάσω" first, and then "δῶς μοι πᾶ στῶ, κ...

Nice to see you all again. My Greek study is on the same loose pace with large vacancies here and there, as it was years before. But I think I should put some time in Latin as well, sooner or later, or it will be too late. * P. S. Odyssey. Wow! And book 5! Wow again! I had an intense study with Plat...

Greek Reference - a free android app

Has anyone seen this android app ? It seems to have come online a few days ago. It' a free middle liddell lexicon plus an elementary grammar reference. It's far too simple that it doesn't do lexical analysis or stuff like that, but the author hints at improving. There has been another app that was n...

It would be great if there is available an android app edition of diogenes, even if you can have access to only the LSJ lexicon. There IS an android app named "LSJ" but it's really the middle liddell. Not that it is of little value, but while the bigger LSJ is free on PC, the paid app gives only the...

I try to use the tonal accent as far as I can: - acute: for a short vowel, high; for a long vowel, rising. - grave: treat it as if the original acute is ignored, i.e., just flat. I see some authors simply drop it.(http://community.middlebury.edu/~harris/Archilochus.pdf) - circumflex: high and the fa...

F = G * m1/r² * m2/r² - "F = G times M-one over R squared times M-two over R squared" v = sqrt((G * M) / r) - V equals the square root of G over R times M over R This way you would put R to the fourth power and R squared, respectively, in the denominator, instead of R squared and R, respectively. [MG] συνηθοῦσε

In the first sentence τοῦ καπετὰν Μιχάλη, "συνηθίζω"(get used to) appears in the form "συνηθοῦσε". By the context, the regular form seems to be impf. 3rd, sg., "συνήθιζε".
Is this form common to the Cretans, or is it specific to the author, Kazantzaki?

My humble layman's guess is like this: It is used parallel to the 3rd person singular imperative γεγονέτω in a commentary to Euclid. So Ι think it may be intended to be the 3rd person plural perfect imperative, conjectured from ἔστωσαν. See below: ----------------------------------------------------...

[Q] Viewing Greek in Older Posts

I sometimes rummage the older posts. But the Greek characters are all broken into garbages due to the change of encoding. This may be a repeating question, but is there any way I can read them again?

And I think the answer should be sticky, if ever.

Thanks.

Tahoma as well works okay with polytonic Greek, if everyone likes the look of it. But I'd love it if a beautiful serif font(such as Palatino Linotype, Gentium, or GFS Porson, etc.) is supported for Greek.
