Answer key: ei-us or e-ius?

In the very first exercise, which involves division in to syllables, the answer key shows eius divided as ei-us.

Why not e-ius? Isn't i consonantal here?

In Wheelock's preface, he says: ... with a knowledge of supplementary syntax given in the Appendix, a student can skip the traditional second-year course in Caesar and proceed directly to the third-year course in Cicero and other authors. What is the traditional course? How many years? Which authors...

Old Kinchin Smith book?

I've got a copy of the old Kinchin Smith "Teach Yourself Latin."

It looks like a much better book than the "Teach Yourself Greek" by the same authot.

If anyone familiar with this Latin book? Opinions?
