Re: Anyone interested in a Greek reading group for the Odyss

I am going to read book 5 starting this thursday. I have no structure. I loved the group reading book 1 of the Iliad, many years ago, but I don’t expect a structured learning environment like that will be available now. We could simply use this thread, I think. I will go slowly, but surely. Anyone e...

Re: Anyone interested in a Greek reading group for the Odyss

The last group I joined here was a long time ago, 8 years or so? I have been busy with Modern Greek since, but a reading group for the Odyssey I would love to join.

Re: Uhhhh....it's been a while....do I still know anyone her

Modern Greek, for a few years now. And I am trying to learn to play the piano. It all seems to take time away from Ancient Greek, not because of the actual time I spend on those other subjects, but because the focus has shifted.

Book 5 *is* still tempting me, however.

Wish I could be as active as I was, what is it, 8 years ago? Trying to read Odyssey Book 5 right now, but other interests have taken over.

Re: Why Not Herodotos?

OK, so there's no reading plan yet, I think? I will start reading book 1 from this friday onwards. Don't know whether posting about it will be useful. Without a plan, discussions tend to go off topic or into too much detail very soon. Is someone still on? Can we agree on some sort of tempo (1 book a...

Re: Odyssey - Book II - Use of imperfect

Interesting comment. Does indeed throw me off bit :D

I *am* overfocused on recognizing aorists and imperfects and trying to understand why one is used. And I do tend to look only at the semantics.

To return to the topic: right now I'm checking scores from Roland Garros, Lleyton Hewitt losing in 5 sets to Gilles Simon (bummer!), Federer through in 3 sets, and gathering courage to cook a spaghetti carbonara (going to be yummy although I'm leaving out the pecorino).

We were thinking about Sicily this year, but I'll be taking two industrial strength nets. Hotels and apartments are not safe! I've been to Sicily and had no bad mosquito experiences at all. I made digital flashcards out of Goodspeed's Homeric Vocabularies. I think I will use the Perseus Vocabul...

Herodotus wordlist

Does anyone know of a wordlist for Herodotus I could use as input for flashcards? Perseus can give me a list with the vocabulary tool, but the translations are not always correct. I can put in the time to fix that, but if someone already did that, I would like to take advantage of that :D

I didn't recognize any reference to homosexuality, so I think people might be overreaching there. Was not sure about the season this episode takes place in, but I guess it can't have been winter. Still , it never occurred to me the ancient Greeks didn't have guest rooms.

Yes, Homer is not the most complex Greek you will find. Still, the part I have trouble with is the solitary part: even with Homer, the reading groups I know are reading the Iliad, not the Odyssey. You end up reading stuff on your own. Part of the fun is sharing.

Sleeping beneath the portico

In the Odyssey, Telemachos, both as a guest of Nestor and Menelaos, sleeps beneath a portico, so basically outside. (Book 3-399 , Book 4-297, ὑπ‘ αἰθούσῃ) This struck me as odd and a bit inhospitable, but Middle Liddell states that this is the 'sleeping place of travellers'. Does anyone have more re...
