Re: Fully search the out-of-copyright volumes of the Loeb Classical Library (PDF or Text)

Not that I'm trying to discourage what you're doing, but for the record I haven't experienced any limitation in the online LCL's search capability (you can search within a work or across the entire library). If you don't have access to the online LCL, and you happen to have a representative search ...

Readable copies of four important 16th century publications posted

I have posted four 16th century publications at https://archive.org/details/@almound. The scans of these pdf's are complete and clear, not mangled, and have been enhanced to make them clean and readable. (They are NOT OCR'd, however.) You will need a guide to ancient greek abbreviations (that by Wil...

Re: Fully search the out-of-copyright volumes of the Loeb Classical Library (PDF or Text)

Curious: What is the advantage of this over just subscribing to (for a reasonable annual feel) the online Loeb Classical Library and using its search capabilities? I encourage people to support new editions of the Loeb Classical Library. If that search service is enough for someone, by all means us...

Re: Can anyone recommend a good old sword-and-sandal movie?

Don't forget the stop-action films by Ray Harryhausen:

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958)
Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973)

Fully search the out-of-copyright volumes of the Loeb Classical Library (PDF or Text)

Just added to the Internet archive the out-of-copyright, public domain volumes of the Loeb Classical Library. These are near perfect digitizations (UTF-8 format) available as PDF but also in text-only format. To make sure you are not violating any copyright law for your country, please check the lin...

Re: Anything concrete to back up the Ionian Migration?

As Cowgill (1966: 78) put it, “. . . the realization that innovations can spread across existing dialect boundaries has led to soberer views of prehistoric migrations.”" You may also find "Separating Fact from Fiction in the Ionian Migration" Naoíse MacSweeney Hesperia: The Journal of the American ...

Re: Anything concrete to back up the Ionian Migration?

I don't know this area which is why I went looking for some papers. I hope you find them useful. Your input is useful. I'll have to look up these sources; I just have time to jot a quick response. One thing I should mention, please understand that when I put forth ideas or theories that are out of ...

Re: Anything concrete to back up the Ionian Migration?

I find the link between frequency and "archaic" mi forms interesting. In my German dialect tenses have reduced dramatically to two in daily talk (Perfekt, Präsens in Hessisch). However, frequent words like go, come and modal verbs are still being used in additional simple tenses like Präteritum. An...

Re: Anything concrete to back up the Ionian Migration?

The reason that I wonder is that this theory of Ionian Migration makes possible the following (somewhat ridiculous) explanation of -μι forms: BABY says, "me want some". He does so because he has reached a definite stage in the development of his growing consciousness. First of all, when he was quite...

Anything concrete to back up the Ionian Migration?

Looking in "Greek : a history of the language and its speakers," Geoffrey Horrocks, 2010, p. 148: "The emerging dominance of Attic as a written medium is all the more remarkable when one reflects that at the beginning of the 5th century this was still the local dialect of a rather backward and isola...

Re: Sumerian

Sumerian-Akkadian is quite amazing. Here's a couple of neat things about it. (You can go to the sites by searching for the following titles.) The Bull Who Would Be King A translation of Tablet #36 in the Library of Congress. The world's first political satire, the first dark comedy and murder myster...

Introducing Almound, applying classical studies to artificial intelligence .... no, really!

Hi All! My interest with Greek is a bit off-beat. Although I certainly appreciate classical studies and am actively pursuing investigation of (primarily) philosophical texts of classical Greece, mainly I am interested in Greek because of its application to artificial intelligence. I am not an academ...
