Textkit Groups

The Textkit study groups are email mailing lists for learners to work together through a Greek or Latin textbook. Sometimes the textbook will be one of the free, out of copyright PDFs available on Textkit itself, sometimes not.

Each beginners' list has at least one guide more experienced in the language who will collate assigments and provide corrections and comments. The more advanced lists are for people who will be working together to come to the best translation and understanding of the text.

At the moment there are only two lists, but we anticipate that certain textbooks (such as Pharr's Homeric Greek) will be popular enough that reading groups will be formed several times.

For all the groups, the first listed assignment day will be devoted to introductions and whatever technical information the guide feels is necessary.

Here are the current reading groups:

D'Ooge's Latin for Beginners

For people using Benjamin L. D'Ooge's Latin For Beginners. Please see the list introduction.

  • Session A: starting January 27, 2006. [Open: accepting participants] [Sechdule]

Pharr's Homeric Greek

For people using Homeric Greek: A Book for Beginners by Clyde Pharr. This is a beginning textbook, and can be used if you've never studied Greek before, or need a back-to-basics refresher. Please see the list introduction, too.

  • Session A: starting February 9th, 2004. [Closed: Completed June 2005.] [Schedule]
  • Session B: starting November 8th, 2004. [Closed: Full] [Schedule]
  • Session C: starting July 7th, 2005. [Closed: Full] [Schedule]

Homer's Iliad

For people who have already had at least one book of the Iliad, especially by way of a text like Pharr, these groups are for reading particular books, or selections from books, of the Iliad.

Homer's Odyssey

This is also for people who have read at least one full book of Homer already. We will start on line 1 of book 1, and go until we finish the entire Odyssey. This is a project of several years. Given the nature of the list, membership is open - people can join at any time - but we ask that all members participate.

Minckwitz' Homer Odyssey XII

This is for people who have read at least one full book of Homer already. Assignments do involve translation, but we'd like to spend at least as much time on Homer's art as his grammar. Please also see the list introduction.

  • Session A: starting February 1th, 2004. [Closed: Session complete] [Schedule]

Wheelock's Latin

For people using Wheelock's Latin.

  • Session A: starting August 4, 2005. Closed: Session completed.]

White's "First Greek Book"

This reading group uses a beginner's textbook of Attic Greek, J.W. White's First Greek Book. The group is for beginners or those in serious need of a Greek refresher course.

  • Session A: starting Monday, April 4th, 2005 [Closed: Session completed] [Schedule]
