Ovid Amores

Post by Emma_85 »

 I had a Latin exam today, and well... it didn't go too well. I'm quite sure I translated every sentence wrong, but I just couldn't work this one out and neither could my sister who's very good at Latin.
Now I don't know which book this is from, but I think it's probably 1st book.

Dum servat Iuno mutatam cornibus Io,
facta est, quam fuerat, gratior illa Iovi.

:? I don't really want to tell you what I translated in the exam... my teacher will laugh his head of and make fun of me in class...
Oh well, here goes:

While Iuno looks after the mutated Juppiter horns,
this very pretty girld does it with Juppiter, which happend.

Well f*** and facta sort of begin with the same letter

Anyway... now I've looked over it again I think fuerat is plusquamperfect of esse and the first part of my sentence is total rubbish as is the last. Facta est meas she has been made, but somehow I still have no idea how to translate this sentence so that it makes any sense at all (I still think my first translation isn't that bad    ).

OVID, Amores, II, 19, 29-30

"as long as Juno guarded Io, changed to a horned beast [lit. "by means of horns"], she made her charm greater than before to Jove [lit. "that (girl, i.e. Io) became to Jove more charming than she had been"] (Translation : G. Showerman, Loeb)

FACTA EST is from FIERI.

It was difficult indeed. The SERVAT means "guard away from lovers" (The entire poem means that love (passion) needs difficulties to flourish), IO is an Accusative (Greek 3rd declension, stems in yod, IO is from IOY-A > IOA> IO: (ἰώ) and the word order is tricky : Dum Iuno servat Io mutatam cornibus, illa facta est Iovi gratior quam fuerat.

When I was 18, I wouldn't have understood this sentence.

Thanks a lot :D ! Now I understand!
I didn't quite understand how it fitted in at all, now it all makes sense.
Well, I only had like a few minutes time for that sentence in the exam, because the others weren't easy either, and I thought I'd better concentrate on those I might be able to get right ...

I'm British :P , come from the same rainy island as you do (but it's a nice warm island compared to the German winter). We moved to Germany cause of my dad's work.

Just in case you were wondering why it says Speyer not Germany under my avatar... that's just making fun of the 'Spey'rers' world view. They all think Speyer is the centre of the world - it's really funny. If they start talking aoubt Speyer's importance in world history... just run, run fast... .
