Unread forums

Certain forums here, like the "Learning Greek" board, have a tendency to appear as unread (with a red icon) when there is nothing new within them. Is the cause of this known?

I believe it's because there are still unread topics - such as threads that are years old that you never bothered to look at.

That's what I first thought, but when I click "Mark Forums Read" the icons change as appropriate, and then a few hours later they revert to unread, even in the absence of new posts.
