Translations

Post by Azalea »

I am a fourth year Latin student.
I do not know where to find appropriate translations. I am eager to find literature that is challenging, but at the same time not frusterating.

My portfolio of famous pieces I have translated includes:
Bayeux Tapestry, Carmina Burana, a little bit of St. Jerome, The Rape of Lucretia

Am I ready for Virgil?
Please, who and what should I read?

You translated Carmina Burana!! The best music I ever heard!!! :D

Fortunae rota volvitur
descendo minoratus
alter in alto tollitur
nimis exaltatus.
Rex sedet in vertice
caveat ruinam!
nam sub axe legimus
Hecubam reginam.

However my favourite is "in taberna quando sumus" really exhilarating:

In taberna quando sumus
non curamus quid sit humus
sed ad ludum properamus,
cui semper insudamus.
Quid agatur in taberna
ubi nummus est pincerna
hoc est opus ut quaeratur
si quid loquar, audiatur.

etc... :D :D

Well, the Amores by Ovid are interesting (do not read Sallust, you'll just fall asleep!).

Medieval or Carl Orff's?

Fas et nefas ambulant
passu fere pari :.
Prodigus non redimit
vitium avari.
Virtus temperantia
Quadam singulari
Debet medium
ad utrumque vitium
caute contemplari.

I listened only to Carl Orff's one, I thinked the original medieval version was lost a long time ago
