M & Q Unit 3, English to Greek

Post by bingley »

Could someone look over these translations please. The themes for this unit were:
perfect and pluperfect active indicative
present and aorist active subjunctive and optative
purpose clauses

1. We have freed the brothers in order that you may not destroy the peace.

2. But you had sent prizes to Homer in order that he might educate your brother.

3. He had written a book about peace in order that we might stop wars.

I think in sentence 2 you either need a i(na or conjunctive.

Why? What's wrong with the optative after a past perfect? Why not ὡς

περὶ την εἰρήνην · περὶ εἰρήνης πολέμους παύσαιμεν · πολέμων παυσαίμεθα could be acceptable too.
περί + Gén is "on the subject of, concerning"; +Acc. is an other "about", nearer to "towards"
