Greek synonyms help pls.

Postby Moerus » Mon Oct 27, 2003 11:29 pm

Hey you all,

does anyone know a good book with Greek synonymes? Or a website with Greek synonyms?

It would be easier for making Greek compositions!
I know books for Latin synonyms, but the ones I know for Greek are all sold out. So does anyone know a book for Greek synonyms that's actually still available?

Many, many thanks in advance,

Moerus

I am not sure if these two books will be of use to you, seeing that they only cover the NT.

Custer, Stewart. A Treasury of New Testament Synonyms.
Greenville, South Carolina: Bob Jones University
Press, 1975. 143 pages. ISBN: 0890840253

R.C. Trench. Synonyms of the New Testament.
425 pages. ISBN: 1565635590

Hey Bert,

it's a start, so thank you very much.
But if any one knows a book of Greek (Attic) Synonyms, ...
Although I think I can find much yet in these two, so thank you Bert,

Greetz,

just be careful with those, because the sense of many of those words may have changed by NT times and within the NT context... but then I guess it depends on how you are using them anyway. :)

Certe hunc librum invenies in bibliotheca Lovaniensi :
Schmit, "Synonymik der griechischen Sprache" (1876 - 86).
Quamvis sit antiquus, tamen magno tibi erit usui.

Lectori Salutem.

Bene dixisti et recte: Lovanii habemus hunc librum in bibliotheca, sed puto eum librum iam non venalem esse, nisi fallor (?). Et librum mecum domi habere velim. Ea de causa librum venalem quaero. Sed multas gratias tibi ago pro consilio tuo,

Cura ut valeas,

Skylax Philippo Ludovico Mauritio salutem

Censeo tibi bibliopolas adeundos esse qui libros de lingua Graeca scriptos vendunt. Talem bibliopolam Lovanii memento in via quae nunc Naamsestraat nuncupatur olim habitavisse, nisi memoria me fallit. Novi autem Lovanii nomine Peeters bibliopola invenitur apud quem multi et varii libri veneunt. At ego numquam talem librum qualem quaeris venalem vidi.

Valete omnes

Gratias iterum tibi ago maximas. Bene novi bibliopolam cui nomen est Peeters. Sed non puto eos tales libros de synonymis habere. Sed multi libri de graeca latinaque linguis ibi sunt venales. His autem temporibus non semper pulchri sunt. Et magni pretii quoque sunt. At bibliopola sola est Lovanii cum talibus libris. Sic est, vita est!

Sed 'qui quaerit, reperit', dicimus lingua nostra et dum spiramus, sperare licet nobis,

Valete.

I will translate it for Bert.

Heel in 't kort stelde Skylax me een boek voor i.v.m.

Philippe Moury (Moerus)

woodhouse's english-greek dictionary often has a few greek entries per word. it might be another starting-point for finding attic synonyms (wooddhouse concentrates on the main attic authors).

the whole dictionary's online for free:
http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/efts/Woodhouse/

cheers, chad. :)
