Aristopopoulos !!

Postby sinhakumara » Thu Mar 03, 2011 7:12 am

Hi Buddies ! POULOS in a Greek name indicates that the person hails from the Peloponnesian part of Greece. My curiosity is - how ancient is the use of the term POULOS for the same reference ? Some scholar to my rescue please....!! sinhakumara. :)

Not all that ancient :) If I'm not mistaken it is first encountered somewhere around the 10th century (A.D). There's some debate about its etymology but most linguists believe it comes from Latin ("pulus" if I'm not mistaken) through one route or another.

But, dear, the Latin word PULUS - does it too refer to the same geographical area of Greece ? Or does it mean something different ? sinhakumara. :)
