On the web, they say that Kaitlyn is a Celtic form of Cateline, an old French form of Catherine. Turning the name into Latin, it is Catharina (Catalina in Spanish).

The original Greek form is Aikaterine (Ekaterini), a word of obscure etymology, which became Katerina.
The name became then Catharina in Latin because the Latin-speaking people believed that the name derived from the Greek "katharos", meaning "pure".

About etymology of names, a wonderful site :
http://www.babynameworld.com/

Regards,
Fernand
