LLPSI - quotation marks in indirect discourse

Post by brookter »

Salvēte, amīcī,

In Lingua Latīna, cap. XI,, all the indirect discourse using dīcit has the reported speech in quotation marks.

e.g. Medicus 'puerum dormire' dīcit.

This is only used for forms of dīcere - e.g. there are no quotation marks when iubet is used.

Is this standard practice? I couldn't find it anywhere in Allen and Greenhough and it looks odd (although that doesn't of course make it wrong...).

Many thanks

David

Salve brookter
It's not usual but it's very understandable.
Cotidianum non est atqui adusquè cognobile.
I'm writing in Latin hoping for correction, and not because I'm confident in how I express myself. Latinè scribo ut ab omnibus corrigar, non quod confidenter me exprimam.

The convention that LLPSI uses is to use single quotes for indirect speech and double quotes for direct speech.

Thanks, furrykef.

I was wondering if the convention was widespread, or whether it was just something Oerberg adopted as a teaching convenience. I believe classical latin had few if any punctuation marks, so if the usage is widespread, I wondered when it was introduced.

I haven't seen it elsewhere, but my experience with Latin texts is rather limited. It's worth noting that Orberg does continue using this convention in De Bello Gallico and likely in Part II as well, so it isn't necessarily intended as a learners' crutch.

There are no ‹standard way› for Latin. No standard spelling, no standard interpunction, etc. etc., so evert writer and publisher do what he or she feels is the best, thus you will encounder many different ways. But, that does not have to be a bad thing, does it? For once you can spell and interpunctuate like you want to ;). Personally I like to use french colons and quotation marks whenever writing latin.
Här kan jag i alla fall skriva på svenska, eller hur?
