Disabling smilies?

Every time I compose a message here, I see 22 smilies that I can (presumably) insert into my message, but I don't want to. In fact, I'd like them to go away, especially the animated ones -- they're so distracting. So I click on "Disable smilies", but it seems to have no effect. Please, is there a way to make these smilies go away?

I think that 'disable all smilies’ will disable them in posts in the forum, so that you will not se them if someone else have used them – but it will not remove them from the sidebar when you’re writing a post.
