How to compare people?

Post by Quis ut Deus » Mon Apr 13, 2009 4:21 pm

Salvete omnes!

For example, I'm trying to say:

"I am nothing compared to you."

I would start out my translation like this:

"Nihil sum comparatus cumte."

I know something is wrong, however!

Gratias vobis ago!

Valete!

I'm sure other people will have suggestions, but you might want to break it up into two phrases in Latin.

"Si tecum/tibi conferor, nihil sum." or "Si te mihi componis, nihil sum."\

In "Nihil sum comparatus cumte," I'm not sure "comparare" is the best verb for "to compare." Perhaps "Conlatus tecum/tibi, nihil sum," or "Te mihi compositô, nihil sum" would also work.

* Note that when you want to say "with me/you/him," etc., the order is "mecum/tecum/secum," etc.

Certus sum alios concilium adferre, sed sententiam duas in partes dividere fortasse iuvabit.
Horae quidem cedunt et dies et menses et anni, nec praeteritum tempus umquam revertitur nec quid sequatur sciri potest. Quod cuique temporis ad vivendum datur, eo debet esse contentus. --Cicero, De Senectute

Use prae with the ablative (="in comparison with").

Prae te nihil sum. "Compared to you I am nothing."
Ex mala malo
bono malo uesci
quam ex bona malo
malo malo malo.
