Some Good Latin Primers

Post by Palinduras »

Dear Forum,

I've just recently come across Textkit and I can't wait to get started on some actual learning. As a student of literature - Renaissance Literature - and as one untutored in the ways of the Latin language, I am most definitely at the very "beginning" stages of my research. This being the case, can anyone recommend to me a good Latin primer? At the minute I am ambling my way through the most recent Cambridge Latin Course Textbook.

Many thanks,
Palinduras.

If you are interested in Church Latin, I would recommend a Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin.
It can present a rather steep learning curve if you have very little Latin though.

I assume when you say primer you mean easy "reader"?

Here is a good primer of Medieval Latin. Easy selections. Poor notes and Bad dictionary though.

Beginning Latin Poetry Reader is good.

Lingua Latina can work as a Primer.

Google Books--consult edonnely's list--has many primers for download. I printed a few and made them spirals.

I like Pharr's Aeneid, though it is a little dense.

Having reread your post, it has occurred to me that you may simply mean "textbook" when you say primer. If you are self-tutoring, pick up Lingua Latina. http://www.amazon.com/Lingua-Latina-Fam ... 884&sr=1-1

Hang on to the Cambridge as well.

If you find yourself flying through Lingua Latina, you may want to pick up a grammar book for reference.
