Pronounciation of word "Hoienses".

Post by thehan »

Would anyone know how this word is pronounced? I've been saying it "Ho-eye-n-ciss", but I'm not sure if this is correct.

It was a term for Huy, the area between Liege and Namur, from my understanding.

Salve thehan
"Ho-eye-n-ciss" looks good to me (with soft 'c'). Bonum id mihi videtur. Also, "Hoy-yen-sess" where the "i" is consonantal, like a "j".
I'm writing in Latin hoping for correction, and not because I'm confident in how I express myself. Latinè scribo ut ab omnibus corrigar, non quod confidenter me exprimam.

I assume we're talking about pronunciation in English, in which case I think it should be pronounced hoy-ENZ-eez.

Certainly, I don't pronounce it that way in English. But, of course, some will.

Oh I wasn't trying to correct your pronunciation, but the pronunciation with "eye" is definitely out of the question I think.

The "i" in Hoienses can be swopped for "y" as you see in Graesse (and 'g', too). I don't see Hoienses with "es" ...but why not and even more variations! (per "es" nomen proprium non video)
Habes etiam in Graesse (opere "Orbis Latinus" nomine) itá : Hoium, Hoiensis urbs, Hogum, Hogium, Hoyum, Huum, Huy, St., Belgien (Lüttich).
In Spain... Hispaniâ est Hoiensis = Hoyensis = Oiensis = Oyensis, monasterium Santa Maria de Hoya vel de Oya
