Looking for feedback on the participle

Post by Quis ut Deus »

Salvete!

I'm trying to translate this sentence from D'Ooge:

The army was in very great danger while marching through the enemy's territory.

Here's what I came up with:

Copiae iter facendes per terram hostium in periculo magno erat.

Also, I was wondering about hostes vs inimicus. Does inimicus refer to a PERSONAL enemy, while hostes refers to an enemy army?

****************EDIT****************

Here was the other sentence, this one from Latin to English.

Latin:

Navis e portu egressa nullo in periculo erat.

My translation:

The ship, embarking from the port, was in no danger.

Gratias vobis ago, amici et amicae!

Salve Quis ut Deus
Quis ut Deus wrote:Copiae iter facendes per terram hostium in periculo magno erat.
What number is the subject, what number the verb? Cuius numeri est subjectum, cuius numeri verbum?
The spelling of "facendes"? Orthographiam "facendes" suspectas.
"periculo magno" = "great danger" an "very great danger"?
Quis ut Deus wrote:Navis e portu egressa nullo in periculo erat.
"egessa", present or past participle? estne participium praesens vel praeteritum?
Quis ut Deus wrote:Does inimicus refer to a PERSONAL enemy, while hostes refers to an enemy army?
Yes, I think so, but maybe I'm wrong. Ità. Sic puto, sed fortè erro.
I'm writing in Latin hoping for correction, and not because I'm confident in how I express myself. Latinè scribo ut ab omnibus corrigar, non quod confidenter me exprimam.

Copiae is plural (armed forces, army)

I see one of my mistakes:

The "erant" should then be "erant" to match the number of the subject

The spelling of "facendes" should be "facentes"

I have to check on how to say "very"

Thanks for the help

Hello "Qui ut deus"! (Nice username, by the way!)
Swth\r salutem "Cui ut deus" tuo. (Nomen tuum multum mihi placet)

The verb is "facio", non "faco". Spell the participle in a different way. Neither "facendes" nor "facentes" is correct.
Verbum "facio", non "faco", est. Participium differenter scribe. Neque "facendes" neque "facentes" rectae figurae participii sunt.

Instead of "terra" you can also use the noun "provincia".
Pro locutione "terra" nomine "provincia"quoque uti possis.

Instead of "copiae" you could also say "exercitus".
Pro sermone"copiae" nomine "exercitus" quoque uti possis.

In order to say in Latin "very great" use the superlative degree.
Latine sermonis "very great" dicendi gratia superlativo gradu utere.

Vale!

Gratias tibi ago!

Thanks for the compliment. Of course, my Latin is far  from divine.

Instead of "facentes" would it be "facientes?"

Yes, "facientes". Download Whitaker's Words program from this site http://users.erols.com/whitaker/words.htm. It's very useful.
Ità est. Ex hoc sito http://users.erols.com/whitaker/words.htm, programma Words nomine apud Whitaker deprome. Perutile est.

FACTUM! I saw the WORDS recommendation on this site when I first signed up and downloaded it last week. It's made everything else obsolete.

I also wrote my own program about 4 months ago. My program declines words and conjugates verbs.

I'll send you guys a screenshot if you want to see it in action.

Salvate!

Here it is! I wrote the program in C# with .NET. Basically, it's similar to WORDS. You can enter the nominative form of the word, and it returns the definition. If it's a verb, you can conjugate it. If it's a noun or an adjective, you can decline it. However, you can't enter any form of the word and have it return the other parts (I didn't feel like doing all that!)

Also, the dictionary starts at zero. You enter the words as you learn them. You can also add a picture to the definition.

I wrote the program to help me internalize the rules of declension and conjugation better.

It looks good, I think. Well done.

Non est, amice meus!

I found that it makes errors in declining Third Declension-I stems, and it doesn't have support for deponent verbs (which I didn't understand at the time, and I still don't now!)

Sed, gratis tibi ago! Valete!
