Greek-Greek Lexicon AND.. Some Jealousy

Post by KramerKram »

So, over in the Latin forums, they have this really sweet Latin-Latin lexicon project...And I'm a bit jealous.

Do you gentlemen know of anything similar for Greek?
Koine-Koine?
Classical-Classical?
Or even Koine-(Early) Byzantine? Classical-(Early) Byzantine?

The closest thing I could find was this: Λεξικόν τετράγλωσσον
(Then again, I'm not entirely sure what that is!)

I asked a similar question privately to IreneY and she answered that this is Greek-Greek:

Λέξεων συναγωγή
There are two more volumes.

I remember finding that.
Is this the same thing?:

I can not figure out how it's laid out. (Sorta-Alphabetically? Where is Δ?!)

Check this out:

A searchable version of Photius' thesaurus/lexicon:
http://lexicon.omhros.eu/wb/default.asp

On the drop-down menu which says: Ὀλα τα Λεξικά τὴς Βάσεως, click that.
Go down to: [Ω] Φωτίου Πατριάρχου Λεξ.

Voila.

I have no idea what the other lexicons are besides Liddell-Scott and Photius'!

Any help?

Hesychius is the largest of the ancient(-inspired) dictionaries we have. It is focused on strange and unusual words.

The Suda is an ancient encyclopedia. There is a larger online Suda project worth looking at.

I don't know the others.

There was recent discussion on the B-Greek (Biblical-Greek) email list about creating a Koine-Koine lexicon. An ancient Greek-Greek lexicon does not currently exist. If you know English, both the Woodhouse Greek-English lexicon and the Louw-Nida Lexicon of Semantic Domains can help in finding Greek synonyms and parallel constructions. The Suda is more of an encyclopedia than a lexicon.

An example of what an ancient Greek-Greek lexicon entry would look like can be found at http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/b-gr ... 47429.html. You may want to view the entire thread on the b-greek discussion list.

Woodhouse's lexicon can be found online at http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/efts/Woodhouse/

A searchable index of Louw-Nida's words can be found at http://www.laparola.net/greco/louwnida.php

Synonyma: Copia Graecorum verborum omnium absolutissima

Font is difficult to read, but anyone have any idea how this is supposed to be used?

Very interesting! It's organized by Latin headwords in alphabetical order, and it gives you all the Greek synonyms for a given word or phrase. So, for instance, the first phrase is A principio ('from the beginning'), and it lists all the Greek equivalents: ἐξ ἀρχῆς, ἐξ ὑπαρχῆς, τὸ καταρχὰς, τὸ ἐξαρχῆς, ἐκ ῥίζης, τῶν ἀρχῶν, τῶν πρῶτων. You're right, the font with all the Byzantine ligatures takes some getting used to....
Dic mihi, Damoeta, 'cuium pecus' anne Latinum?
