Episcopus going to Oxford

Post by Episcopus »

Not that it's very important but it's cool anyhow. I thought that this was going a little off-topic.

However for me I must learn faster. I am going on a "elite pupils [from deprived area!)" (but we're not really elite) visit to Oxford University. It is mainly à faire avec English with the English head's being very zealous; however I plan to run off and lose myself in normal fashion to the Latin place. I hear there are many different places. I will need a map. And some guy to tell me how to find the Latin professor once I find out whence I will start. I also have a sneaky tiny camera which can take pictures video and audio in abundances (well, video is 200 seconds but excellent for a little no memory card thing) with which I may record a (hopefully, depending on my progress) conversation avec the latin professor or just some guy whom I may meet that speak latin! I wonder...what does the professor drive...probably a classic bentley or some Lexi ;D

I edited the subject of this message to reflect what you're really talking about. Using M&F Unit2 Pg45 #13 as your title would be misleading to others who may click on this thread expecting to find information about this M&F exercise.

Ahh... I was actually wondering what this post was doing here, thought it had been posted in the wrong forum :).

I have no idea where you'd be able to meet a Latin professor at Oxford, but maybe you could sneak into a lecture?

There are MANY Latin professors out there! I believe if you visit the pages of the individual colleges, you can find out their names and areas of specialisation (as well as the occasional incriminating photo, if you're lucky ;D).

For more information: www.classics.ox.ac.uk . (Somewhere there you might be able to download the Mods Handbook, which lists all the Classics dons. I have a copy of said book, but it's a paper copy and the list is FAR too long to type up.)

Map of Oxford: I believe you can download one somewhere on the main Oxford University website: www.ox.ac.uk

On what date are you scheduled to go, Episcopus? If time is on your side you may well be able to take part in one of the various classics induction lectures that will be occurring from the 6-11 Oct.

~dave

Cambridge...?
Which college?

I do hope - although Oxford goes on my UCAS form - that we need not be enemies (except maybe at rowing)... ;D

What other universities are going on your UCAS form, if may ask? My list'll be Cambridge (though I doubt I'll stand a chance), Imperial College London (again doubt I'll stand a chance), then Bath University (hope I stand a chance at least, cause after that I have no idea...).

Episcopus, not that you don't already know this but you will be awed and humbled by how little you know when talking to these Latin profs. (the old adoge of "the more you know the more you realize you know nothing")

When I was fortunate to visit Oxford two years ago I "stumbled" (aka went far out of my way to purposely attend) into an intro Latin course and spoke with the prof after.

I will definately be spending at least one year at Oxford later on in my studies and am looking forward to it.

Have an amazing time and take lots of pictures!

Raya: I am reading Classics at Christ's, Cambridge yes (that is, when term starts; I will be "going up" a week tomorrow).
If you are currently in the upper sixth (or whatever jovial name you may have for the year of 17-18 year olds!), I think the deadline for Oxbridge applicants to send off their form is today. I may be wrong on that, so I don't want to scare either you or Emma if you are at that age!
It's a shame you chose Oxford over Cambridge for Classics ;) Three of my friends made that rather rash choice! I suppose you have an extra year of teaching there to make up for its deficiencies! To which college are you to apply?

~dave

I'm 17, but won't be applying to university until next year (due to the mess that is the Mainz education system...).
As you may have guessed by me talking about London Imperial I don't want to study Classics. It's physics I'm trying to find a place for, which is much more difficult than finding one for Classics :-\. Though in the summer I did read to my surprise that they still had a place for maths at Cambridge. Maybe no one wants to study physics next year? Or only people with bad marks? ;)
As for which college, I have no idea what so ever. I think it wouldn't be too hard to find out, which one is best for Physics, but then again, if I do apply to the one that's best at Physics so will everyone else and then I'd be less likely to get a place...
I think it's all very complicated and confusing, it would be much better if you could just apply to the university and then they sort you into colleges or something like that.

Well, Emma, with regard to applying to Oxbridge, you can make an "open" application, whereby you don't select any college and you are (if successful) assigned to a college where space permits.
Choosing science over art, eh?....:) I suppose everyone needs moments of madness! Saying that though, I have found that at various parts of physics there is room for artistic conjecture. I'm not sure whether you have read John Gribbin's "Schrödinger's Cat", but it is a seminal work that deals with quantum mechanics and the philosophical atom-gazing tied in with that. I enjoyed it very much.
If you were to select the best college for Physics at Oxbridge, it is not as hard to get into as one might expect. Obviously you need the ultimate criterion, namely academic ability, but the great majority of students that apply shrink away from doing so to the most academic colleges, fearing the fallacy that they are consequently the most applied to.

~dave

I've heared that it's less likely you'll get a place, though, if you apply to the University directly.

I haven't read "Schrödinger's Cat", yet. But it's on my bookshelf just waiting for the autumn holidays ;D.

You need to apply through UCAS to get into any undergraduate courses in England. You send them your application and a list of your preferred universities. UCAS then sends your application form out to the universities on your list and you just have to hope they'll take you. It's quite annoying as it would be better if I could write different applications for different universities.
Perhaps they're trying to make the process easier on the student. You only have to fill out one application instead on one application per college. The only concern is having something "fall through the cracks". What if your application didn't get forwarded to one (or more) of the universities on your list?

How long do you have to wait for a response from the time you submit the UCAS?

Well you apply before you actually know your results, so you only get the definite response when the A-Level results are released (end of the summer holidays normally.) Gives you a lot of time to search for a new place to live, doesn't it?
I hope I won't have that problem as I'll know my results in March, but I'm not really sure...

I am looking forward to going and seeing just how suped-to-the-max these guys are.

Those induction classics lectures sound awesome...but for now that would certainly be out of my depth :-\

It is most probable that we will go some time in November or December - my english teacher says that they are to reply to him regarding the date...

Realistically, I bet that we will have to go around the English departments and subsequently the trip will suck >:(

What about a cat? I saw two fighting to the death last night. It was great entertainment.

Why do people call them dons?

There's a rapper who calls himself Joey crack the don and I keep confusing professors with rappers consequently!

mariek:
Well, as I understand it, at Oxford (if not elsewhere) 'Professor' is a specific title which only a few dons have attained.

Keesa:
I *might* be going to Oxford this December - I haven't applied yet, much less been invited for interview!

Emma:
Well, I'm applying for Classics at some institutions, and Classics and Drama at others. Apart from Oxford I've got Royal Holloway, whichever UCL institution offers Classics, and Birmingham (which is better renowned for the Drama than the Classics).

Physics - fascinating stuff, but the maths kills me.

Dave:
I actually finished school last November (here in Mauritius the academic year is Jan-Nov), but found myself (unexpectedly) forced to take this year out. So, during the time I'm doing the IB Classical Greek HL (an A-level equivalent) course, for which I shall sit exams in May, and then I'd start university in Sept/Oct next year

For Oxbridge applicants the forms have to be received by Oct 15 - so there's time yet! - were you trying to give me a heart attack?! :P

I'd probably be applying to Christ Church, Wadham, or Brasenose - I don't know yet.

Goodness, you make as though Oxford is totally useless! But I already have a cousin at Cambridge who gives me similar such silliness... his being there, if nothing else, keeps me away. ;D

HAH! O Raya, ensure yourself to have done Greek A-Level!

Have you seen that language aptitude test? :o

You have to comprehend an imaginary Oxford language! It is rather funny and stupid and insane! I'm printing it out!

Oh yes, the language aptitude test is most amusing! I wish I got to do that, instead of the boring (and under the circumstances, difficult) translation test I'd have to do. :-\

Away for a few days and what do I find? Mauritians and Americans planning to invade Oxford, abetted by Armenian Welshmen!

O Episcope, ensure that you visit the Ashmolean which has a huge collection of antiquities. There's a virtual tour at http://www.chem.ox.ac.uk/oxfordtour/ash ... fault.html. />
The Lit.Hum. faculty is next door on St. Giles and they post a lecture list on http://www.classics.ox.ac.uk/lectures/index.asp. />
I'll be around there this weekend as I have my final tutorial before my exam (gulp!). :'(
