LANGUAGE

Post by Neos »

The word language came from the Latin lingua (tongue, speech, language) from the verb lingo (to lick), which is related to the Greek verb λείχω (liho; to lick).

In Greek:
α) γλείφω: lick [glifo]

This folk etyology is irrelevant and false... :=) Actually, in Old Latin inscriptions it was written DINGVA pronounced dingua and came from the same Indo-European word as the English 'tongue', and the reconstructed Proto-Indoeuropean root could be dnghw(a), of course pronounced dnnghu(a). Mea Lingua gustat omne. MEA DINGVA GOSTAT OMNED.

May I ask which resources you use? It seems you must be using a very old resource to follow such a mistaken etymology. Almost any modern resource that includes etymology, will give you the kind of etymology that Estoniacus said above.
