BBG vocabulary words and strongs number

Postby joseph47parker » Thu Sep 25, 2008 6:43 pm

Has anybody taken the time to make a chart of the BBG vocabulary words with the associated strongs number? It would be helpful as I'm learning the word to have a verse to associate it with.

I don't understand. There are no verse reference in the Strong's dictionary. Your time would be much better spent looking up the words in a lexicon instead of using a bare-bones dictionary like Strong's.

Well,

If I have the strongs number, I can use one of my concordances to list ALL the places that word is used. The lexicon that I use only has a few verses associated with it. For me, the more examples I have the better I can learn.

Ah, I see.
Your concordance list the words using Strong's numbers?

I think I have what you are looking for. I am trying to attached an Excel file (zipped) and I cannot. The post continues giving me an error that it cannot upload the attachment. If you provide an email, I can email it to you. Or I could just list it here in the post as text.

I am working on some software that reads Strong's and I just added the vocabulary from BBG. So I did a cross-reference between the two and generated the attached summary in Excel, which I think is what you are looking for. It doesn't get everything because the encoding characters used in Strong's and BBG are different and there are a dozen or so spelling differences between the two. Even a missing acute or iota subscript would make the spellings different and they would be missed by the software. But it did find all but about a dozen of them. For example, David and Jerusalem are spelled differently between the two sources and where not found by the software. But I looked those up and added them manually.

But out of the 329 entries found in the vocabulary list for BBG, the cross-reference I ran found about 315. I added another 5 or so that were spelled differently between the two, and 9 of them were not found or there were issues that I could not resolve easily. But a manually lookup in Strong's on the missing 9 is probably easy enough.

Hope this helps.

Gotta wonder why someone would do this. There are online search engines that use Strong's numbers. You can use them there. It's much better to get a Greek concordance of the NT, wouldn't you think? Just look up a Greek word in its lexical form, and it will give you all of the places where it's used along with snippets. I just don't get this dependence on Strong's dictionary. If you're learning the language, Strong's is probably the worst dictionary that you can hold on to. Change over to LSJ or learn to use a decent Koine lexicon. It will help in the long run - and if you learn to use a real dictionary, the obvious problems with Strong will become visible to you.

The point to having the list is not what you are thinking. It is not intended to replace GNT dictionary or lexicons. It's just to help locate the words in the text and via a method that doesn't require a manual lookup of 327 words. Personally, I would just use Logos to look up what I need, as I need it. But I think others that are just starting out learning Greek might not have access to a lot of the texts and search engines. I think I paid $800 for my version of Logos. And some of the lexicons are $100 or more. Strong's is cheap and available for free. So it makes some sense to me to have a cross-reference from BBG vocabulary cards to Strong's. Are there others available for free that would be better? I can try to cross-reference those as well.

But mentioning what you did is really good. People like me that are learning Greek outside the classesroom (for now) need to know how to approach this correctly. I personaly tend to avoid Strong's because I don't like it and it often leads me down the wrong path. But the Strong's reference are always avaiable even in the cheap or free search software.

I did this because it was easy to do and the original poster asked for it. But it makes sense because when people are studying the flash cards from Mounce, it can be painful to link it to anything else. So you are stuck having to look up each word, all 326 of them or all 1000 if you are using the full card stack. So an obvious shortcut would be to auto-generate a cross-reference to something else and not have to spend a month looking them up manually.

If I had acess to auto-generate cross-references to another lexicon, that would be nice. But I don't know if they publish free version that will allow you to search and generate the cross-references for yourself. Strong's is published as XML, so it is easy to write the code to generate the cross-references, which is what I did. I'll look for others and see if I can add them as well.

If anyone knows how to access others, I would be happy to expand the cross-reference to include others. If you have any suggestions, just let me know.

Also, I still cannot upload a ZIPped version of the Excel file that has all of the BBG vocabulary cross-referenced to Strong's. So I will post the text in reply to this posting.

Here's the BBG voc cross-ref to Strong's. I would perfer to post the actual ZIP file with the Excel, as the font could be a problem and the formatting is lost when the forum reformats it for display.

You can just copy this to notepad, then save it as a text file, then import it to Excel as a space seperated file. That will regenerate the file reasonly well. But it may be easier to just email me and I can email you a copy of the Excel version. Or if someone knows how to post it as an attachment to the forum, I can email it to them. I could also put it on a webserver and provide a link if someone wants it.

Frequency did not come through. I messed up the code for that. I can add it. But I think the next thing I will do is try to add references to another lexicon if I can find a free version on the web. I will add freq in if I do that. I am also looking to add the full 1,000 card stack from Mounce as well. Then expand the list to include Strong's and some other lexicons. This is something I have wanted to generate for myself, so I don't mind spending a few minutes to generate it.

Hope this is helpful...

Best regards,
Greg Rothlander

Wouldn't a concordance to the Greek New Testament be quicker, easier, and more thorough?

I'm sure it would be, if I had access to search it programmatically. Doing it manually is what I am trying to avoid. It only took me about 30 minutes to adjust the search to include cross-ref to Strong's and generate the list of 326 words to strongs. I can expand it to the full 1,000 cards and rerun it in another 30-minutes or so.

If I have access to a concordance programmatically, like via XML or something. I could set that up in probably 30 to 40 minutes or so and regenerate the list.

If you do this manually, it would probably take many hours or more to look up 326, and probably a week to go through all 1,000 cards. I reality, I don't think anyone would really take that amount of time for something like this unless it can be done via software or unless it was extreamly useful and worth having. I'm not sure it is that useful.

I agree, very time consuming. I use this site for my word studies:

http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~fisher/gnt/search.html

It's simple to use. You can search words by case, mood, number, person, etc. if you want and it lists all the verses in the Greek with the search word highlighted. You can even limit the search to particular books of the NT (very helpful if you want to see how a particular author uses a certain word). I can't imagine what else you would need. And why spend time digging through a book when you can find every occurence of υιος in two seconds, with the verses listed in Greek? I say exploit technology as much as possible.

For what it is worth, I have the Zondervan Exhaustive Concordance to the Greek NT by Kohlenberger in a print copy. I never have problems looking up words in the Greek NT. I use it all the time to check forms and usage in general. It takes seconds to find any word and minutes to read all the instances.

But then, I am book guy. I only use electronic stuff when I have to.
I am writing in Ancient Greek not because I know Greek well, but because I hope that it will improve my fluency in reading. I got the idea for this from Adrianus over on the Latin forum here at Textkit.

I generally prefer books too, but I think computers are better suited to tasks like word searches. Because of computer technology we've been able to compile frequency lists for languages based on million-plus-word corpora which can greatly aid learners.

So, what's the problem with Perseus' vocabulary tool?!?! ;)

The idea is great! But in my experience it doesn't work as well as I would like. It seems to have some difficulties depending upon how you organize the search. I haven't been able to generate good frequency lists for the Vulgate from it.
