Breviarium

Post by Brent2009 »

Recently I have taken up reading Eutropius' Breviarium, however, I am having a little difficulty understanding a few sentences

"Galliae autem tributi nomine annuum imperavit stipendium quadrigenties"

"He levied on Gaul however, in(or by) the name of annual taxes, 400 times tribute."

does this see right ? it seems slightly confusing when I read it.

for any missed references, I will give you the sentence before and after.

Britannis mox bellum intulit, quibus ante eum ne nomen quidem Romanorum cognitum erat, eosque victos, obsidibus acceptis, stipendiarios fecit. Galliae autem tributi nomine annuum imperavit stipendium quadrigenties. Germanosque trans Rhenum aggressus immanissimis proeliis vicit.

Salve Brent2009

400 times the tribute = 400 x the tribute = a tribute 400 times bigger than that paid by the British (ut opinor)
