Difficulty with demonstratives

Post by Junya »

Hi.

I am translating philosophical texts from Latin to Japanese every day, other than the reading trainings using other materials.
And there is a problem.
The Latin writers (or philosophers?) have a very bad way.of writing.
The texts are full of demontratives and the orignal nouns don't appear very often.
So if you resume reading from the place you stopped yesterday, you will find yourself totally lost about what the demonstratives are referring to.
If you read more than two texts simultaneously, this difficulty increases all the more.
For this reason, I am limited to translate only two texts a day.
But I want to read more texts.
Is there any advice?

That's amazing, Junya. I can't give advice. Can you advise me how to read such difficult material so quickly?
Mirificum est, Junya. Te monere non possum. Potesne me monstrare quomodò tales difficiles scripturas tam citò legere queam?

Hi Adrianus, how are you?

I wrote.
I am limited to translate only two texts a day.
This is not that I translate the whole of two texts, but that I translate bits of each text a day.
The texts are long, and I can't even read through them so quickly.
It needs days for me to read through one chapter.
I am a slow reader even in Japanese.
Quick reading gives me a headache (an actual headache).

Me, too. And I remember you get headaches from excessive reading. If I would advise you, it would be to let your health determine your workload. What's more important than your health?
Idem à me requirit. Et memini caput tibi saepè dolere cum nimiùm legis. Si te moneam, dicam quòd salutem negotium regnare oportet te pati. Quid gravius est quàm salus?

Thank you for remembering what I told long ago.
Yes, I believe there is no need to study to such an extent that my body be broken.
I think the body is more important than study or career or anything.
Though I often go too far into studying and damage my body.

I think your effort is the more praiseworthy because it involves three-way translation,—of Latin, English and Japanese,—and that's on top of very specialist and difficult subject matter.

Plùs laudanda tua opera est, quae triplicem traductionem complectitur,— et latinè, et anglicè, et japonicè,—ut mittam quòd tàm difficiles arcanaeque sunt scripturae quas vertes.
