Microphone and Voice Recording
Hey guys,
I'm looking to do some home voice recording again, and I was wondering what might be a good microphone to purchase for my computer. I have an iBook G4, and it comes with a really superior mic, but you can always hear the computer's harddrive and fan. Any suggestions you might have would be most welcome!

Re: Microphone and Voice Recording
Some basic Shure, like an SM58, should do the trick. It is also important to get a preamp. Maybe an ART Tube. These are pretty inexpensive pieces of equipment.Lucus Eques wrote:Hey guys,

You can always get one of those "computer" mics, but you will have to go through a bunch of them to find something that's more or less OK. Real mics, like the Shure ones give you a much better quality and depth, but they cannot be connected to the computer audio in directly (well, they can, but you just won't get good levels like that). This is where a preamp comes in. I can't say that my experience with voice recording is vast, but I know this much!

Thanks again, Deses, that's awesome. I can't find any Shure mics for less than $99, and that's a wee bit out of my price range; do you know any used mics that would be lower in price and recommendable for use?
Also, the cool ArtTube you recommended, how will that connect to my computer?

So, I went with a Shure SM48-LC ( http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=270105 ).
I think this preamp would be better since it has USB connexion:

What do you think? And does this need any wires?

I haven't tried USB hookups, but they sound good in theory. Personally, I like to see some knobs and meters on a device. There is an ART Tube with USB:Lucus Eques wrote:So, I went with a Shure SM48-LC ( http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=270105 ).

Depending on what you get with the microphone, you may not need any additional adapters or cables (as long as you have a spare USB cable of the right kind). Cables and connectors are more difficult to shop for online, because you can never be sure you are getting the right thing. Just order your hardware and then when it arrives go to a RadioShack or some place like that to pick up anything you might need.

Hehe, yeah, I want to do some more Latin recordings, but I want the quality to be good (past recordings have been acceptable at best). I'm also going to be recording the love sonnets of Pablo Neruda for me to listen to the car, and to share with my girlfriend who lent me the sonnets. Oh, and I want to record The Power of Now by Eckhardt Tolle for my family.
Anyway, you can check out some of my other Latin recordings at Scorpio Martianus. That blog, and those recordings, are merely a beginning, but I hope to build on both in the near future after a long delay.
