I have just bought L&S Abridged G-E Lexicon. What is the significance of the 1 to 2 words per page in capital letters?

Those are words thought to be root words, fundamental roots not derived from some other base root nor compounds of other words.

And you can use Diogenes to access the full version of the lexicon, or just download the older, public domain edition, although I prefer the dead tree edition. :wink:
