I love living in Madison (Wisconsin, USA), even if we are at this moment under our 3rd tornado warning this year. Apparently we have a very high used bookstore per capita.

And today I just found a used Rzach edited Teubner, "HESIODVS Carmina." All of Hesiod in one nice hardcover, 15 dolla.

After years of me pillaging "Paul's Books" for books in Greek, the owner knows me well.

[size=150]εὐτυχεῖτε

Ooh, lucky you!

Is it just me, or - why is it that second-hand book stores seem to be the only places where one has any chance whatsoever of getting Greek texts? ::)

Then again, I love old books: the worn covers, the yellowed pages, the wormholes... they have *character*!

Oh yes! that musty smell - the pulse races when I see those yellow pages. I just love those "tiny" editions of books they produced in the 19th century, about 10 x 15cm. I guess they were the Victorian era's version of the Walkman, you could carry them in your pocket and read them on a train. Luckily my close-up eyesight is very good so I can read them easily. I have quite a number of Latin authors as well as Dickens and other authors of that period. Finding books in Latin is also much easier in 2nd hand book stores, although there still seems to be a lot of material being printed (see Bryn Mawr Classical review). I don't know what bookstores are like in the USA but here in Australia they seem to be full of popular trash and fancy "coffee table" editions with very little substance. Maybe I'm just getting picky in my old age!

History. Once the classics were required in many schools, now they're not much. Lucky for us a lot of the old required reading texts make their ways to used bookstores.

I agree. Unfortunately sometimes they start to fall apart. In the past there wasn't much I could do about it. These days a text in danger of falling apart is sent to Jeff to scan and add to the textkit collection. :)
