Anacreontics

Post by rxfarnham »

Remarkable. An active Ancient Greek chat line. I have recently encountered a text attributed to Anacreon, Ode 1, on a lithograph of a rose. I have not found it in those works of Anacreon or imitators available to me on the Net. It goes like this (using the SPIonic codes):

Stefon ou}n mh kai lurizw
Para\ sou Dionuse, shcoij
Meta Kourhs baqukolpou,
P{odinoisi sefaniskois
Pepukasmenos Xoreusw.

It;s something like ":A wreath have I not nor harp playing,
for you Dionyseos ...""

It doesn't exactly sound like Anacreon, but if you know of it or its source, I would be grateful. Thanks.

(I scribbled this from the source, and it may not be exact.)

I have a recent edition of West's Carmina Anacreontea (Teubner). I'll check it this evening to see if this is in there.
This is the last five lines of Anacreontic 44 (According to West; Bergk 42).

στέψον οὖν με, καὶ λυρίξωπαρὰ σοῖς διόνυσε σηκοῖς·μετὰ κούρης βαθυκόλπουῥοδίνοισι στεφανίσκοισπεπυκασμένος χορεύσω.

(15 minutes later)

Suddenly I wonder what exactly is meant by ὁ διονύσου σηκός.

Thank you both, for your kindness and erudition. If it is:
steyon rather than stefon, I don't know this word and cannot find it in Little Liddell. May I impose again?

It's an aorist imperative. "Crown me, then, and I will play the lyre at/in your shrines, Dionysus."
Now, your text is definitely not right. I could only reconstruct so much of it, and am still missing the last word in the third line. It must be a word of two long syllables, and it must begin with a vowel.
The line scans if you take the Divine Name to scan u - u, which I've seen sometimes, as though the iota became a semivowel rather than getting its own syllable. I've also seen it δεύνυσος in real Anacreon.
