I am having a curious problem with a dialogue I am putting into iambic trimeters. The names of two characters, "Alonso" and "Almeria", when abbreviated in the conventional manner, give "AL" and "AL", entirely indistinguishable. Now the dialogue has clearly already been going on at the point at which the extract begins so I am not entirely happy writing out the full name of each character the first time they speak in my passage. Moreover, I would have to devise Greek equivalents for the characters, and I am at a loss as to which names I would select. Leaving the names unchanged is out of the question: "Alonso" and "Almeria" will look hideously out of place in Greek drama. I have briefly thought about trying to find (or devise) Greek etymological equivalents of the names from the root elements present, but doubt that this is practical.
Any ideas?
