I taking a self taught New Testament Greek class. I'm using Bill Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek. The biggest challenge that I'm having is learning to pronounce the words. Every body keeps telling me to use phonics but I never was able to here the differences in the sound. When I was in college my spelling was very bad so they put me in a special spelling class that used phonics. And when I finished the class my spelling was worse because I could not here the difference in the sounds. Does any body have any ideas or suggestions as to how I can over come this challenge.

Pronunciation should not be too difficult, since whatever pronunciation scheme you adopt, it'll be straightforward how to pronounce a word, and the only problem will be with sounds you might not be familiar with but that's something you can learn.
Spelling I guess is more difficult because with some pronunciations the same sound is written in a variety of ways, so there is no difference in sound to indicate the difference in spelling and in the end you've just go to memorize it. You might want to choose a pronunciation that minimizes this sort of thing because of that.
I'm not sure if that answers your question, though.
