D'Ooge's pronouciation of o

Post by explain »

hi, my friends

on page 6

long vowel is like holy
while short vowel is like wholly
but I look up the two words in cambridge dictionry (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/)

both pronounce like the word "so"

then what's the difference?

I am not an native speaker of English, who can help me? thank u:)

In principle, it takes twice as much time to pronounce a long vowel than to pronounce a short one. There is nothing more.

What is confusing is that D'Ooge's book states that only the vowel 'a' is the only one with the same pronouciation in both long and short.
