Exercise 85, Page 21

Post by Carola »

Ex. 85
I think it might be useful if I type in the questions from the text book, then the answers (and it might also stop me making stupid transposition mistakes as well).

1. Cyrus sent gifts to the generals.

2. He led the horse into the river.

3. The general had ships of war (lit. “long ships?).

4. We are sending the wine to Cyrus.

5. The generals sent horses to Cyrus.

Also, while my “Unicode Classical Greek Inputter? is not bad, it is slow and difficult to read on my laptop, so any suggestions for typing Greek, any free programs anyone could recommend? Also thank you to everyone who helped with corrections and comments.

Good job ! :)

About writing Unicode, I have used the Antioch program, which is sadly not free. But you can dowload here a slightly downgraded version for free (and you will be reminded that "you are using an unregistered version" each time when you close down the program...)

Regarding your work, you will see I added some nu movables. I replaced also some acute accents with grave accents according to the rules.

1. Cyrus sent gifts to the generals.
(single accent on δῶ?α)

2. He led the horse into the river.
("led", not "sent")

3. The general had ships of war (lit. “long ships?).
(Note the grave accents)

4. We are sending the wine to Cyrus.
(circumflex on οἶνον)

5. The generals sent horses to Cyrus.
(You wrote "we sent")

Thank you once again for these corrections.

I slipped up on the "nu's" but I am having a problem with the grave accents. I can't seem to find the rules for this in White? I haven't printed out all the pages so it might be I just haven't seen it.

Arghhhh! that is so complicated. I must have seen it but perhaps hoped that if I ignored it it would go away! Oh well - more studying!
