group for "Latin For Beginners" by Benjamin L. D'O

From a purely selfish standpoint (I prefer lists to groups that I have to GO to) It looks like it would be useful to have a group for "Latin For Beginners" by Benjamin L. D'Ooge. What would be the best way to go about thinking about doing this?

I am not even sure that the list would have to be hosted at TextKit, as we have been discussing the possibility of a Latin learning list over on some Lutheran theological and homeschooling lists. We have pretty much decided NOT to go with ecclesiastical Latin if we go with all.

I am envisioning one chapter per week... Since we do not really have an experienced Latinist, joining textkit and using the answer key that goes with the book would at least be something.

I had been going through Wheelock's at http://www.ravendays.org/latin/lists/listindex.html , but, I have a neuromuscular disorder and can no longer hold books. Online texts work best for me...

I have just finished 3 years of university level Latin, but would like to go back through D'Ooge for some revision. I wouldn't mind doing the exercises and also helping some beginners if possible (although my real focus has to be on Greek this year and my time is a bit limited).

We seemed to gallop over the grammar and get into literature very quickly (and see some other recent posts about this subject) and I feel there are areas where I am a bit wobbly on syntax and translation from English to Latin.

You can message me or post back here if you want to discuss any ideas about this.

It looks like there are six interested people, so I will see what it will take to set up a list on the 25th.

First, the session web page: D'Ooge A. This is where the schedule will be.

To join the mailing list, you need to visit this page, and enter you email address. You'll get email back asking you to reply to confirm you want to joing (prevents people from subscribing people against their will), and then someone will approve your membership (to prevent spam weasel drive-by joining).

We'll also be using Paul's GTSS (that G will perhaps need to change) web-based system for handing in work. That'll let us compare answers very easily. You'll also need to log into that to use it, so we'll need to get login names and passwords out to people who will be participating. We'll deal with that a bit later.

And, as a matter of trivia, this is the first group where I will also be participating as a neophyte.

I think the 'G' stands for 'Guided', not 'Greek'.

Hi there and welcome to Textkit. I have been preparing a schedule which I will post this week - the idea is just to post homework exercises through the group site and those of us (like me) with some Latin (I have just finished 3 years of university level Latin) can offer some comment and help. It is really a co-operative effort, not a correspondence course, although I have prepared some extra notes to help with your studies and I have a lot of material from my uni course. I am not the world's best Latin scholar by any means - but probably good enough to help beginners!

First, Iamblichus, could you make your avatar image smaller, at least more narrow? It crowds out the text of people's posts.

Please see this page: D'Ooge A. This has the schedule of assignments. Right now it is very tentative. In another few days I will update the schedule so that the section numbers for each assignment will appear. For example, the first translation sentences are in Section 31, which is on (book) page 15 of the book. Homework is handed in on a web-page exercise system. It will allow us to compare our work very easily.
