Iliad 2:200-201

Post by Bert »

ἄλλων μῦθον ἄκουε*, οἳ σέο* φέρτεροι*/ εἰσι,

I don't understand how the translations (on Perseus) I checked come up with; 'listen to the word of others who are better than you.'
I came up with; 'listen to the word of others, they are better than you.'
In order for it to mean listen to those who are better than you οἳ φέρτεροι would have to be in the dative. (or accusative -> obey others etc.)

Hi Bert,

I think your translation is right. The 'relative' clause is added as a reason why the soldier should listen: "because they are better than you".

Cordially,

Paul

Of course. It makes good sense now. I did not view oi(/ as a relative pronoun but simply as 'they'
(I knew I could count on you.)
Thanks.
