I need a word...

Post by Bombichka »

how does one express in Greek the idea of "to exchange", meaning 'I give you and you give me at the same time; I give you something and you pay off with something'.

I guess it should be some prefixal derivative of "ameibesthai" or "allattein" or "didonai", but I can't figure it out right now... :(

The dictionary I have on hand lists ἀνταλλάσσομαι and ἀμείβομαι, although the latter seems to mean something more like "respond" or "reply". So yeah, good guess.

Can you give a little more context? In a Homeric situation, at least, ἀμείβω is exactly the word you want.

I wanna write to a friend that we should exchange some knowledge because I'm a linguist and he's a theologist and we're mutually interested in our areas.

I'd be inclined to stick with ἀμείβω.
