Hi,I'm a new one and get troubled in every step

Post by Jasper »

I've been interested in Greek for long but there's no one here who's studying Greak let alone ancient one.I even don't know how to pronounce, rough and smooth breathing, for instance.
And I also have no experiece of Latin.Must I learn it in advance? :( :?:

Hi Jasper,

Generally, rough breathing can be described as (slightly) breathing out. It's like a "h" in English really. Smooth breathing is not breathing out.

Although some books assume a knowledge of latin before you start on Greek, it's not necesarry.

“Cum ego verbo utar,” Humpty Dumpty dixit voce contempta, “indicat illud quod optem – nec plus nec minus.”
“Est tamen rogatio” dixit Alice, “an efficere verba tot res indicare possis.”
“Rogatio est, “Humpty Dumpty responsit, “quae fiat magister – id cunctum est.”

It's so kind of you.
And there're still quite a few problems which I can't work out by myself.
Shall I go on asking and would you like to go on helping me with, such as the accents?
Thank you.

Keep asking, mate. There are many people here who know waaayyy more than I do (i'm just a beginner myself) who will be able to answer your questions.

Jasper, there are many threads here in these forums that relate to pronounciation, some current ones. Have a look around at what's already there and see if you have any questions left after that!

I'm new on this site, and also willing to learn ancient greek; the problem is I may need a little help. In exchange I could help anyone interested in learning french or spanish.
