Romans 6:2

Post by Geoff »

οἵτινες ἀπεθάνομεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, πῶς ἔτι ζήσομεν ἐν αὐτῇ;

I translated this,

We who are dead to sin, how yet shall we live in it?

The pronoun threw me off. Any comments would be helpful.

It's good except you took the verb and made it into a noun.....We died = we are . I'd probably translate the verb as a verb, but other than that you got how the pronoun is functioning just fine.

ALSO....how come you were able to write d e a d and I wasn't?? Maybe the filter has a direct agenda against me?? :wink:

dooh, I can't believe I did that. Too easy when you don't slow down.

"We who have died to sin" would be good. The censors are out for you i guess."

How common is this kind of pronoun use?

Robertson called the relative pronoun "the chief bond of connection between clauses".

I did a quick search in GRAMCORD and came up with 133 verses that have hOSTIS in the nominative functioning like this. Matthew leads the pack, with 29 times....it happens 10 times in Romans. If I change my search parameters to include AUTOS and hOUTOS (in the plural like in Rom 6) the hits go up to 266 verses. In other words.....it's pretty darn common.
